I love when I hear from clients whose wedding I photographed years earlier, asking if I could photograph a family session for them. It's not just that the couple liked my work enough to contact me again, but more that I really get that I'm being asked to witness the continuation of a journey that I was asked to witness when it began. That's no small thing, and I'm always honored by it.
I was excited to hear from Jim and Misty a few weeks ago to ask if I would come to their home for a family session with their three kids, 2 goats, numerous chickens (all of whom have names and personalities), one amazingly soft bunny, turkeys, and pigs. Oh, and a cat who seemed annoyed that I was disrupting its normal afternoon for a few photos. No really. It was annoyed.
I loved Misty and Jim, and right from the start, long before their wedding in 2009. Back then, people still wanted to meet in person before hiring a photographer for their wedding, and I was glad for that experience with this unusual couple. I knew right away that there was something unique and exceptionally kind about their love for each other. Being with them was like being an honored guest in their magical world for a moment, and it was a lovely world that I never forgot. At their wedding I remember noticing how Jim couldn't keep his eyes off of his beautiful wife - and how easy it was to get swept up in their reverence for each other, and for their Creator.
Fast forward to ten years from that initial meeting, and my having the pleasure of seeing them all these years later. Being invited, once again, into that magical world - only now, so much bigger and brighter, with three amazing children who fill their hearts beyond what even THEY thought possible. There I was - instantly - back in that place of leisurely, easy love, now filled with apple trees, goats, swimming pools, mopeds, scooters, flowers, gardens, and three Beings who are here for big things - and right on time, you can just feel it. Oh, and lots and lots and lots of love, just for being who you are.
As I begin a new chapter in my career that seems to be taking me in another direction, I find myself wanting to say something to my hundreds of wedding couples that I've had the privilege of witnessing over the past twenty years. And that is; I saw your love that day - and it was a powerful love. So when you have times where you doubt it in the years to come, please know that I saw it, and the photographs I was proud to take are proof that it was, and IS, there. And that is no small thing, ever, by any stretch. Maybe that's why you hired me. So that years later you would remember that LOVE is all that matters, and it's the only game in town.
Here are just a few of my favorites from a magical afternoon with magical people, three more of whom I'll never forget when I remember the sweet world of Misty and Jim.
