Joseph and Michael - Always Look For the Reflection
While I genuinely like and appreciate my clients - all of them - every now and then there is a couple that touches me on a level I can't quite put my finger on. This was how I felt about Joseph and Michael - a couple that felt like brothers to me right away.
There were so many things that touched me about this celebration of love, not least of which is the reverence these gentle souls have for one another. I loved the vows they shared, the "just go with it" attitude when there were torrential rains for their outdoor ceremony, the excitement they showed at seeing their guests. I loved that the first thing Joseph did after the ceremony was to call his mother, who couldn't be there in person. And I loved that Mike said, "Hi Mom!", with such excitement and love, when her sweet face popped up on the screen.
For me, personally, my favorite moment came during the ceremony, when Michael had surprised his groom with a song, and he had hired a violinist and pianist to perform this beautiful tribute to their love. As a photographer, I was in a tough situation, because the ceremony was being held under an awning on the porch - and the musicians were performing inside, where they were safe from the rain. How could I photograph the tenderness of this moment? That's when I heard the internal message, "Look for the reflection." I looked to my right, and I saw the perfect way to capture the emotion of the moment.
Mike and Joe, it was such an honor to photograph your wedding day for you. I wish you all that you wish for yourselves my brothers. And thank you for reminding me to always look for the reflection.
Here are some of my favorites ...
(Special mention to a personal hero of mine, John Fetterman, who performed the ceremony.)
