Jen and Thomas were married last week at Pittsburgh's beautiful Duquesne Club, and I was literally counting down the days to this one. Not only are they the last couple out of a group of three couples that I've had the honor to photograph on their wedding day, but they are just way cool and easy to be with people. And they are comedians, which is a language I understand.
There were so many things I loved about this wedding, from the atmosphere in the rooms as Jen and Thomas were getting ready, to the "first look" that ended up being a divinely synchronized moment of elevator doors opening at the same time and Jen and Thomas literally bumping into each other as they got off. I love these kinds of unplanned moments, and I loved that this easy-going couple appreciated the humor of it all. I loved the hugs that Jen gave to her guests - all of them - every single one, I swear ... The kind of hugs that made those receiving them feel as if they were the most important person in Jen's life, and her wedding day was the best it was all because they were there. I loved Thomas's adorable expressions, handsome gestures and adoring glances toward his beautiful wife. I loved his friendship with his brother and his love for his mother. It was easy to watch them all day. Everyone should know such a kind couple - especially one so generous with their love.
On a personal note, I wanted to say that I'm always aware of the humor of a wedding day - often most clearly seen in the "off" moments of blinks and mid-conversation enthusiasm caught between guests. I love those moments. That moment when Aunt Marge throws her head back to laugh, even if it shows her dentures slipping. It's the laugh everyone knows - and it's the Aunt Marge everyone knows. I sometimes edit out these photos if they seem unflattering to the person in the photo. But with this wedding, I left them all in, and I think Jen and Thomas will appreciate the beautiful absurdity of those moments caught between frames. They are some of my favorites, and I suspect they will be some of their favorites too.
Congratulations Thomas and Jen - and thank you to all three of "my couples"! It has been such an honor to be your wedding photographer, and I'll never forget you.
Here are a few of my favorites from Jen and Thomas's wedding day!
